The major thrust of this new interest comes from the development of the Human Genome Project. In this project, scientists are uncovering the genetic code of the human body and identifying what genes are responsible for various aspects of human development. They are also identifying how irregularities in genetic development occur, resulting in various syndromes. Today there are known organic causes for approximately 50% of persons with developmental disability (Matalainen, Airaksinen, Mononen, Launiala, & Kaarianinen, 1995; Zigler & Hodapp 1986); however, not all of these known causes are genetic. There are approximately 750 different genetic disorders associated with developmental disability (Opitz, 1996). Nevertheless, many of these remain a mystery to professionals working in the field.
